A calçotada in the centre of Barcelona

A calçotada is a seasonal meal built around a long table and an even longer lunch. It is traditionally eaten at farmhouses outside the city, but at Bodega Joan we serve it right in the Eixample: the calçots are grilled over embers until the outer layer is charred and come with romesco sauce made in our kitchen.

What the menu includes

  • First course: grilled calçots with romesco sauce, 10 per person.
  • Main course: mixed grill — chicken, churrasco, butifarra sausage and pork belly — with “Caliu” potato, grilled artichokes and aioli.
  • Dessert: crema catalana.
  • Drink: house wine, beer, soft drink or water. One drink per person.

Frequently asked questions about calçots

When is calçots season in Barcelona?
From November to April. The best time is between January and March, when the calçot is at its sweetest. Outside those months no calçotada is served.
How many calçots does one person eat?
Our menu includes 10 calçots per person as a first course, followed by the mixed grill. A traditional calçotada usually serves between 10 and 15.
How do you eat a calçot?
Hold it by the green part, pull away the charred outer layer, dip it in romesco sauce and eat it in one go with your head tilted back. Getting your hands dirty is part of the tradition, which is why we hand out bibs.
What is romesco sauce made of?
Roasted tomato, ñora peppers, toasted almonds and hazelnuts, garlic, vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. We make it in house following the traditional recipe.
What exactly are calçots?
A variety of sweet, tender spring onion grown mainly in Catalonia, around the town of Valls. The name comes from the Catalan verb “calçar”: during cultivation they are banked up with soil so the white part grows longer.
Do I need to book for the calçotada?
Yes, it is strongly recommended. A calçotada is a group meal and in high season the dining room fills up, especially at weekends.
Can I have a calçotada without leaving Barcelona?
Yes. There is no need to travel out to a farmhouse: we are at Carrer del Rosselló 164, in the Eixample, with Hospital Clínic (L5) as the nearest metro stop.
